Drain Snake vs Hydro Jetting: Which One Your Drain Needs

Two tools, two problems. A cable machine (also called a snake or auger) is mechanical: a flexible cable spins a cutting head down the line and punches a hole through soft blockages. Cables are right for kitchen grease, hair in a tub trap, and small object clogs in toilets. They are not right for tree roots in a main sewer, scale buildup in galvanized lines, or repeat clogs at the same spot. A hydrojetter is hydraulic: a 4,000 PSI nozzle with a reverse thrust head walks itself down the line and scrubs the pipe wall clean on the way back. Jetters are the right answer for root masses, grease accumulation, scale, and any clog that comes back within thirty days of a previous cable clear.

Every truck carries both. We pick based on the diagnosis, not what is hooked up at the moment. Our recent Hudson drain cleaning and tree root removal job walks through a real call where three previous plumbers had run cables on the same line and only the camera and hydrojetter combination finally showed the homeowner what was happening underground.

Tree Roots, Cast Iron Scale, and Clay Sewer Line Repair

Older homes built before the early 1980s often have vitrified clay sewer laterals. The tar seals at the joints have broken down over decades and roots find the gaps. Galvanized branch lines from the same era scale up on the inside and slow flow long before they fully clog. Cast iron drain lines, common in mid-century homes, develop channel rust that traps everything that passes through. PVC and ABS (standard since the 1980s) are usually clean unless a belly developed where the line was not properly bedded during construction. We camera the line on every main line clog and show you the condition on a small screen before recommending any repair.

Spot Repair, Trenchless Reline, or Full Sewer Line Replacement

When the camera shows the line is past cleaning, three repair paths are on the table. Spot repair on a single failure point (a crushed section, an offset joint, or a root invasion at one specific clay seal) is the smallest scope and the right call when the rest of the line is healthy. A trenchless reline runs a new line inside the existing pipe without excavating the yard, which is a strong option on driveways and landscaped properties. Full sewer lateral replacement is the right answer when the camera shows widespread root intrusion, multiple offset joints, or systemic failure across the run. We present all three options in writing with fixed prices before any digging begins.

Why Drains Keep Clogging (and How a Sewer Camera Helps)

Recurring clogs almost always have a structural reason. A line that clogs the same way twice in six months is rarely the same clog returning; it is a downstream issue that nobody saw the first time. Our visits include the option to camera the line at the same appointment so the next surprise does not become an emergency. The video file is yours to keep. Family Membership Plan members get an annual main line hydrojetting visit included, which is enough to keep most homes clear year over year.

Warning Signs To Watch For

  • Multiple drains backing up at the same time
  • Gurgling sounds from a toilet when the washer drains
  • Sewage odor in a yard, garage, or bathroom
  • Tub that fills when the toilet flushes
  • Standing water in a shower base or sink

Our Process

A clear, repeatable process for every drain cleaning job.

  1. 01

    Diagnose, do not just clear

We start with a clear diagnosis. A drain that backs up every six months is a sign of a deeper issue, not just a quick clog.

  2. 02

    Right tool for the job

We use a cable for soft clogs and a hydro jetter for grease, scale, and root intrusion.

  3. 03

    Camera inspection

Every main line clog includes a high definition camera inspection so you can see the actual condition of the pipe.

  4. 04

    Long term plan

We share photos, video, and written recommendations so you can budget repairs or relining with confidence.

FAQs

Drain Cleaning questions, answered.

Quick answers from our expert plumbers. Still have a question? Call our team and a real person will pick up.

01 What is hydro jetting?
Hydro jetting uses high pressure water through a specialized nozzle to scour the inside of a pipe. It removes grease, scale, and root intrusion that a cable cannot fully clear.
02 Will a sewer camera inspection damage my pipe?
No. Modern push cameras are flexible and small enough to navigate residential lines without damaging the pipe wall.
03 Do you offer a warranty on drain cleaning?
Yes. Most cleared drains include a written warranty period, and warranty length increases when we use a hydro jetter or you are on our maintenance plan.
04 Why do my drains keep clogging?
Recurring clogs almost always point to a deeper problem like a belly in the line, a broken section of pipe, or root intrusion. A camera inspection is the fastest way to identify the cause.
